Fehu Rune – Norse Runes Examined in Depth

How to pronounce Fehu (feh – who)

Fehu – The 1st Rune

fehu

Fehu: The Look and Sound

Fehu is the first rune in the “Elder Futhark” and is actually the reason “Futhark” starts with an “F”, since “Futhark” is a modern contraction of the first 6 runes of the nordic alphabet. It’s sound is most similar to the same way we pronounce “F” in modern English, but is also similar to the “V” sound, which doesn’t have its own rune in the Elder Futhark, and was replaced by a new rune for the “V” sound in the later Futhorc. It literally translates into a collective noun for livestock, normally cattle, but sometimes sheep, but is used as a shorthand for personal wealth. As a symbol, it’s a wish of good fortune upon another, a norse rune for luck.
